The Conference Purpose & Reasons
Committees

The purpose of this Conference is to analyse the various aspects of Moon colonisation, in order to identify the most relevant items related to a permanent manned base programme, and to stimulate Political Authorities’ interest in a common international initiative for a “Condominium of Observatories on the Moon”. The support of Public Opinion and Scientific Community is the starting point to achieve the needed willingness to pay necessary for a positive international treaty. The Conference will therefore cover the technical, architectural, logistic items concerning the Moon colonisation, as well as the scientific targets and social-economical aspects.

In the past, Italy has made courageous choices in the space sector and has, as a result, acquired a central role on the international scene. In fact, it was the first western European country to independently develop a satellite (San Marco), and it has promoted total and fruitful cooperation on a global level. In addition, Italy is at the technological forefront of certain technologies that could soon become a key element of competitive edge in the development of planetary exploration systems.

Italy has succeeded in developing intense and special collaboration relationships with other European nations, as part of ESA, as well as with the United States and, therefore, NASA, and this, in the view of this conference, will be the starting point for creating the International “Condominium of Observatories on the Moon”, confirming the historical Italian penchant for “exploring” new territories of knowledge
